This is the same moment in the book drawn by two different artists. I thought it would be interesting to juxtapose them.
I was trying out scenes in tubes on the page above, and beginning to break down Chapter 11 of Carroll's book into a series of images. I wasn't hugely confident actually putting images in yet, so I cut out the scenes, stuck them in my book and then glued toilet roll sections around them.
I also tried out my own, more contemporary version of Alice - keeping the essence of her character but distancing myself from the traditional image of Alice with long flowing hair and a big blue dress.
These were inspired by Hannah Read Baldrey, who illustrated her craft book, Everything Alice, with images made entirely from cut up paper. I based the first drawing on hers but adapted it into a silhouette. The image below was another of Tenniel's Drawings in the style of Read-Baldrey.
Here I looked at Disney's interpretation, using a line drawing, but in the negative, making the image darker - both literally and metaphorically.
